5th Annual Blessing of the Fleet

  • River Drive Thunderbolt, GA 31404 (map)

Blessing of the Fleet is a cherished maritime tradition brought back to the Town of Thunderbolt, honoring our deep connection to the water and those who work it. This year, we proudly celebrate five years of community and tradition along our waterfront. Anchored in history. Sailing forward together.

On Saturday, April 25, 2026, the Town of Thunderbolt along with Tubby's Thunderbolt, JIT, and Xfinity will proudly host the 5th Anniversary of the Thunderbolt Blessing of the Fleet, celebrating the continued revival of a cherished coastal tradition that had been dormant for nearly three decades before returning in 2022.

Set along the scenic banks of the Wilmington River, this signature waterfront festival honors Thunderbolt’s rich maritime heritage while welcoming all vessels — including commercial fishing boats, shrimp boats, recreational boats, and personal watercraft — to receive a ceremonial blessing for safety and prosperity in the year ahead. The blessing will be performed by Father Brannen of Tybee Island's St. Michael's Catholic Church.

While rooted in the working waterfront traditions of the shrimping and fishing industries, today’s Blessing of the Fleet celebrates the entire boating community and invites residents and visitors from across Coastal Georgia to participate in a full day of family-friendly festivities. The event will feature live entertainment, local artisans and makers, food trucks, a kids’ zone with splash activities, youthpreneur vendors, and opportunities for families to gather and connect along the river.

Since its return, the Blessing of the Fleet has grown into one of the region’s most meaningful community festivals, supporting local businesses, nonprofits, and creatives while drawing thousands of visitors to Thunderbolt’s restaurants, shops, and waterfront venues.

“Reaching our fifth anniversary after such a long hiatus is incredibly meaningful,” said Thunderbolt Mayor Dana Williams. “This event represents who we are — a close-knit waterfront community that honors its roots while welcoming everyone who enjoys life on the water.”

Residents, visitors, boat owners, vendors, and sponsors are encouraged to take part in this milestone anniversary celebration.
