SCAD Cinema Circle: Celebrate the 50th anniversary of Elaine May’s MIKEY AND NICKY, an unsung masterpiece of American cinema returning to the big screen in a gorgeous 4K restoration overseen by May herself. John Cassavetes and Peter Falk bring their explosive chemistry to May’s brilliant, deeply personal gangster film, playing lifelong friends whose relationship unravels over one desperate night of loyalty, paranoia, and betrayal. The drama behind the camera became nearly as legendary as the film: May shot with three cameras throughout production, reportedly exposed three times more footage than was used for GONE WITH THE WIND, and even allegedly hid reels from the studio amid a notorious battle for control of the edit. The studio retaliated with a minimal release and the wonderfully hostile tagline, “You’re not gonna like these guys.” Fifty years later, history has had the last word: MIKEY AND NICKY endures as a daring landmark—a bruising, funny, unpredictable, and emotionally devastating gangster film like no other.
