Join The Walter and Linda Evans Center for African American Studies for a new film series Sundays at The Center, featuring notable cinematic works that lionize and champion Black history, arts, and culture.

Minnie Evans: Draw or Die, a one-hour documentary film produced and directed by filmmaker Linda Royal, lifts the unique voice of self-taught artist Minnie Evans from conversations between Evans and photographer Nina Howell Starr. Their taped discussions from the late sixties/early seventies reveal a loving friendship and Evans' personal history. During her lifetime, Minnie Evans drew an estimated 3,000 pictures using crayons and other media. Grounded in the compositions and forms she produced, the film's visuals highlight her artwork through the decades as well as archival images, Starr's black and white photography, and the gardens and coastal landscapes that inspired Minnie Evans’ work.

A Signature Experience of the Savannah Juneteenth Fine Arts Festival, Jubilee Pour of Liberation is an elevated culinary and spirits experience celebrating Juneteenth through Black excellence in food, wine, and craft beverages. Designed for guests 25 and older, this curated gathering will bring together featured chefs, live cooking demonstrations, select wines and spirits, and live band entertainment in a refined, welcoming atmosphere.

From 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, guests move throughout the grounds enjoying soulful flavors, live entertainment, specialty vendors, artist experiences, and an intentional outdoor atmosphere designed for connection and celebration. After tastings conclude, the evening continues on the lawn with music, fellowship, and sunset views over the marsh.

The Intracoastal Playboys love performing at the Tybee Post Theater and they always put on a great show. While this Savannah based country music cover band focuses on country’s “golden age”, paying tribute to artists such as Buck Owens, George Jones, Loretta Lynn, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Paycheck and Dolly Parton, they also include some not so classic covers by artists like Terry Gibbs and Tony Orlando & Dawn. The band's dedication to the genre is not limited to covering the music of the time but also dressing the part. Often clad in cowboy hats, embroidered shirts and jackets, and other period clothing, their attention to authenticity has helped them become one of the most popular classic country bands in Savannah.

Formed in 2022 by Andrew Ripley (bass/vocals), Tom Worley (drums/vocals), Matthew Garappolo (rhythm guitar/vocals), Ryan Schimmenti (acoustic guitar/vocals), and Kevin Rose (lead guitar), the band has grown to incorporate additional Savannah mainstay musicians such as Igor Fiskman (pedal steel) and Phil Price (piano). They have been praised for their high-energy performances and their ability to connect with their audiences. A biography of the influential writer, filmmaker, and cultural worker, Toni Cade Bambara inspired a generation of artists to dedicate themselves to community empowerment. Directed by Louis Massiah, TCB: The Toni Cade Bambara School of Organizing is structured as a series of lessons on cultural organizing gleaned from Bambara's life and shared by her friends, colleagues, and students that emphasizes her quick humor and deep insight.

“On the thirtieth anniversary of her death, Louis Massiah has conjured the great Toni Cade Bambara back to life. Through archival footage and personal testimonies — most notably and eloquently by her friend, editor, and champion, Toni Morrison — this formidable writer and warrior for social justice blazes back into consciousness. There was simply nobody else like her. TCB: The Toni Cade Bambara School of Organizing offers a tonic for today’s woes and a lesson in joyousness for today’s challenges. With his band feeding off his drive and exuberance, the striking 6’3” 29-year-old with his trademark Afro roams the stage (often barefoot), ripping out memorable guitar licks with ease. His ability to win over an audience – any audience – is proven night after night on the bandstand. With his warm, magnetic personality, Birchwood is as down-to-earth as his music is fun, thought-provoking and vital. His mission is to spread his music far and wide, to share his joy, to play his heart out, and to push the blues into the future. (this a seated event)

This year's celebration also honors a special piece of Leopold family history with the display of a beautifully restored 48-star American flag that belonged to Peter Louis Leopold during his World War I service.
