  • Google Calendar ICS

Loyalists & Liberty: Savannah in the American Revolution is a new exhibit at Savannah History Museum featuring 17 restored Revolutionary War-era cannons and other artifacts recovered from the Savannah River in 2021-22.

The exhibit opens Fourth of July weekend in celebration of America's 250th anniversary.

Starting July 3, Loyalists & Liberty: Savannah in the American Revolution will be open during normal museum hours, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., seven days a week.

In addition to the 17 newly restored cannons, two cannons displayed in their original found condition, three anchor fragments, and other incredible objects will be displayed.

Spanning approximately 3,000 square feet, this landmark exhibit will present narratives more reflective of diverse participation in the Revolution, highlight Georgia’s role in the movement, and expand on naval stories of the region.

This project has been a community effort. We are so grateful for the outpouring of support from corporations, heritage organizations, and individuals.

Screening: Sundays at the Center Presents "TCB: The Toni Cade Bambara School of Organizing"

Join The Walter and Linda Evans Center for African American Studies for a new film series Sundays at The Center, featuring notable cinematic works that lionize and champion Black history, arts, and culture.

A biography of the influential writer, filmmaker, and cultural worker, Toni Cade Bambara inspired a generation of artists to dedicate themselves to community empowerment. Directed by Louis Massiah, TCB: The Toni Cade Bambara School of Organizing is structured as a series of lessons on cultural organizing gleaned from Bambara's life and shared by her friends, colleagues, and students that emphasizes her quick humor and deep insight.

“On the thirtieth anniversary of her death, Louis Massiah has conjured the great Toni Cade Bambara back to life. Through archival footage and personal testimonies — most notably and eloquently by her friend, editor, and champion, Toni Morrison — this formidable writer and warrior for social justice blazes back into consciousness. There was simply nobody else like her. TCB: The Toni Cade Bambara School of Organizing offers a tonic for today’s woes and a lesson in joyousness for today’s challenges. With its propulsive jazz soundtrack and knowledge of history, Massiah’s film feeds a bone-deep hunger for inspiration.” — B. Ruby Rich

Selwyn Birchwood at District Live

  • District Live at Plant Riverside (map)

Selwyn Birchwood, Florida’s rising young blues fireball, is a guitar and lap-steel-playing bundle of pure energy. He delivers his original songs with a revival tent preacher’s fervor and a natural storyteller’s charisma made all the more impactful by his raw, unvarnished vocals. Birchwood plays high-octane blues – at once deeply rooted, funky and up-to-the-minute – with true passion and honest emotion. With his band feeding off his drive and exuberance, the striking 6’3” 29-year-old with his trademark Afro roams the stage (often barefoot), ripping out memorable guitar licks with ease. His ability to win over an audience – any audience – is proven night after night on the bandstand. With his warm, magnetic personality, Birchwood is as down-to-earth as his music is fun, thought-provoking and vital. His mission is to spread his music far and wide, to share his joy, to play his heart out, and to push the blues into the future. (this a seated event)

Nirvani is the most authentic and electrifying tribute band to the legendary grunge pioneers, Nirvana. Known for their accurate recreation of the raw, high-energy performances that made Kurt Cobain and company a cultural phenomenon, Nirvani has been selling out venues across the country. From the iconic, distorted guitar riffs to the anguished screams and rebellious spirit, Nirvani brings the music of Nirvana to life in a way that feels as powerful and visceral as it did in the 90s.

Nirvani’s live shows are a high-octane journey through all the hits and deep cuts that defined Nirvana’s catalog. With a stage presence that channels the chaotic energy of the original band, they deliver an unforgettable experience, playing fan favorites like “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Come As You Are,” and “Heart-Shaped Box,” alongside deeper tracks that true Nirvana fans will love. Their wild stage presence, combined with instrument-smashing finales, ensures no two shows are ever the same.
