SCAD Cinema Circle: Akira Kurosawa's 'Seven Samurai'

One of the most thrilling movie epics of all time, SEVEN SAMURAI tells the story of a sixteenth-century village whose desperate peasant farmers hire the eponymous warriors to protect them from marauding bandits. Influential and monumental, Akira Kurosawa's enduring touchstone—featuring legendary actors Toshiro Mifune and Takashi Shimura—seamlessly weaves philosophy and entertainment, delicate human emotions and relentless action, into a rich, evocative, and unforgettable tale of courage and hope. Restored in 4K for the first time on the occasion of its 70th anniversary, see that the film Pauline Kael described as "widely imitated, but no one has come near it."

Tickets for the event are free for SCAD Card holders, $5 for students, military, and seniors, and $8 for the general public.

Lingua Flora Exhibition
Jun
21
to Sep 8

Lingua Flora Exhibition

Drawing primarily from Telfair Museums’ permanent collection, Lingua Flora explores the use of flowers in fine and decorative arts from the late 18th through the early 20th centuries. Flowers and other botanical subjects are associated with multiple visual languages during this period. Natural historians’ precise depictions of individual plants became popular motifs in a variety of media. Expanding global trade spread the transfer of subjects and design types across cultures, creating a lingua franca, or a linking language, in imagery. Flowers’ symbolic associations also grew, and authors of “languages of flowers” wrote about them in poems and guidebooks. Works of art that incorporate plant life demonstrate the wide impact of these varying cultural phenomena. With this close examination of all things floral, this exhibition will shed new light on ceramics, silver, textiles, and works on paper in Telfair’s collection, many of which will be on view at the Jepson Center for the first time.

In his most ambitious exhibition to date, Tyler Mitchell displays photographs innovatively printed on textiles in an immersive, laundry line installation alongside new “altar” sculptures. Strung from a zig-zagging clothesline, Threads of Memory is Mitchell’s latest iteration of the iconic form, stretching nearly 300 feet along the unique gallery space and framing its historic 1850s Savannah Gray brick archways. The hanging textile prints depict pastoral scenes and Black bodies, drawing inspiration from Gordon Parks’ photography and the landscape of the southeastern U.S., where Mitchell was born and raised. Complementing this dramatic, enveloping experience, Mitchell’s sculptures reference historic domestic objects with subtle alterations and embedded photographs, evoking memory and belonging in ways that are deeply personal. The exhibition’s poetic nature articulates a sensitivity and attentiveness to the quieter moments of life and the potential for beauty and transformation in things that may otherwise seem ordinary. Combining installation, sculpture, and photography, the artist invites us to consider our own relationship to the image, our environments, and each other.
