Down by the Riverside - Stories from the Gullah/Geechee Tradition

Down by the Riverside-Stories from the Gullah/Geechee Tradition

The stories that hail from the Gullah/Geechee people from Coastal Georgia and South Carolina are as deep and enduring as the Savannah River.

Master Storyteller Lillian Grant-Baptiste will use the art of storytelling to tell the powerful, yet at times, poignant stories of the Gullah/Geechee people. Savannah is in the middle of the Gullah/Geechee Corridor, and is rich with significant historical happenings, and Grant-Baptiste will soulfully and skillfully highlight and bring to life specific events from Savannah’s history, events like, “The Weeping Time,” “The Proclamation of Forty Acres and a Mule,” and many more. The performance will be exploding and bubbling over with creative and artistic expressions, expressions like African drumming, poetry, and the singing of soulful and melodic songs from the African American tradition. The audience will be both mesmerized and riveted by the magic and movement of the performance, and will be on the edge of their seats, longing for more.

Camellia Festival at Cohen's Retreat

Camellia Festival at Cohen's Retreat

In the Fall of 2023, Cohen’s Retreat Community Foundation & over 3000 Savannah Chatham County Public & Private School students joined together to plant 1500 Royal Velvet camellia’s along the beloved Harry Truman Bike Path in Savannah, GA. The community service effort was an incredible reflection of the impact our Youth can have on their own City, and how much fun they can have in the meantime. Each Friday over this 6-week service project, public & private schools from across the County would come together with one common goal: learn about the rich history of the camellia flower in Savannah & how they'll be contributing to it moving forward. Each student that participated in the Savannah Camellia Project was able to leave their own mark on history in a way - with a plant tag on their camellia, where they left their name & year on each plant. Cohen's Retreat Community Foundation deemed this project a success once we saw new friendships being made between students that may never have met each other otherwise, new skills and interests being developed in nature & gardening, and even just hearing the students saying they'll return with their friends & families to show them the hard work they did that day to plant their camellia. We intended for this Project to unify our community, but it truly touched our hearts in ways unimaginable.

The Savannah Camellia Festival will be the first annual celebration of this historic project - celebrating the efforts of the students & educators, and hopefully reuniting those that made new friends along the trail. We also want to take this opportunity to provide more education & information on the camellia flower itself; this project was a small first step & we learned many students would take advantage of this if it were accessible.

The day's events are in partnership with the Coastal Georgia Camellia Society & include a bloom show, plant sale, keynote speaker, information sessions, and arts & crafts activities.

The bloom show begins staging at 9AM at Cohen's Retreat. This 2 hour time period will be utilized for those interested in entering a bloom into the competition to be judged by the public. Each participant can enter more than one bloom into the show. Once participants arrive at Cohen's Retreat for staging (prior to 11AM), they will enter through the side door entrance of the Art Tank event space, and go through the registration process for the competition. Once you have completed registration, you are welcome to return back to Cohen's Retreat once the event is open at 11AM.

The day's activities all run from 11AM-4PM. The plant sale is with Hobbes Hill Farms, and a portion of the sales go towards the Cohen's Retreat Community Foundation for the upkeep of the camellia trail. They will be selling dozens of varieties of camellias outside of Cohen's throughout the event, and it is even the same Master Gardener that grew the 1500 Royal Velvet camellias planted for the Savannah Camellia Project. What a beautiful full circle moment!

We will have light refreshments available for guests with a cash bar, and encourage those looking to visit for the Camellia Festival to also browse through the rest of Cohen's Retreat and possibly grab a bite at the restaurant after our feature speaker!

This show’s strength is its location, two hours north of Jacksonville, Florida, and two hours south of Charleston, South Carolina providing a natural magnet for attracting boating enthusiasts and exhibiting companies from all three states and beyond. The show primarily showcases powerboats. Savannah, like Charleston, is on the coast, which makes it a strong salt water fishing location. Each year, fishing experts are on-hand for seminars and demonstrations. The show also features boats overlooking the Savannah River and other maritime displays and exhibits. In its history, the show has held shag contests, seafood festivals, live music and other family entertainment. It’s one of the few winter boat shows in the country fortunate enough to have a water-front view. Whether it’s sunny or inclement weather, there is something interesting for everyone at the Savannah Boat Show.

EARTH ANGEL

It’s hard to miss the large, shiny sculpture soaring over your head when you enter the Jepson Center’s atrium. Titled Earth Angel, the reflective butterfly is a site-specific installation by the collaborative Los Angeles-based duo FriendsWithYou, aka artists Samuel Borkson and Arturo Sandoval III. Their overarching goal is to connect us to each other and ourselves, spreading friendship and building community around the world. Earth Angel is a new character in their longform conceptual project to unite humanity by renaming our planet Ocean. It represents a visiting creature from beyond the heavens to Ocean who is the embodiment of vibrational harmony. The mirror-like surface symbolizes the universal totality present in everything and invites us to see ourselves in this mythological character—distorted, transformed, and anew.

Our museum educators will lead the group with Seuss stories, games and activities. Dancing Oobleck, fantastical arts and crafts, and a rhyming scavenger hunt maze are only a few of the
fun activities in which families can participate. We will also have many community partners providing Seuss-filled fun throughout the day!

Admission to Seuss Fest is included in the cost of regular admission to Savannah Children’s Museum, $10 for all guests 18 months and older. Admission can be purchased online ahead of time here: https://shop.chsgeorgia.org/Events.aspx.

This event is FREE for Coastal Heritage Society members. Members also receive 10% off in the gift shop!

We can't wait to see you there for a wacky, wondrous, and fantastical day!
