SCAD Cinema Circle: The Searchers

SCAD Cinema Circle: The Searchers

John Ford's sweeping, uncompromising frontier epic stars John Wayne as Ethan Edwards, a former Confederate soldier who embarks on a relentless journey across some of the most ravishing and majestic vistas ever captured on film to find his niece, who was abducted by Comanches years earlier. As one of the last great classic Westerns, it reflects a time when the West was viewed through a romantic lens, with clearly defined heroes and villains. Yet its enduring influence lies in Ford’s ability to make us wrestle with the complexities and contradictions of our national character—its racism, violence, and individualism contrasted with its pursuit of equality, order, and community. Don't miss this staggering big screen restoration of the film that it's nearly impossible to imagine American cinema without.

An introduction by a SCAD faculty member precedes the screening.

Tickets, part of SCAD Cinema Circle: Goes West, are free for SCAD Card holders; $5 for students, seniors, and military; and $8 for the general public.

SCAD Cinema Circle: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Celebrate the centennial of Hollywood icon Paul Newman with a special screening of the film that cemented his legacy as a true magnetic titan of the silver screen. In a film that captured the zeitgeist and exists in the rarefied air of cinematic immortality, Newman is effortlessly cool as the roguish outlaw Butch Cassidy, alongside Robert Redford's Sundance. With a radiantly playful script by William Goldman, Butch and Sundance quip and cavort their way across the west robbing trains with the twinkly-eyed charisma of genial gentleman bandits. Subversively disrupting the Western genre with its anti-hero appeal, this ultimate buddy comedy remains a testament to Newman's enduring brilliance.

An introduction by a SCAD faculty member precedes the screening.

Tickets, part of SCAD Cinema Circle: Goes West, are free for SCAD Card holders; $5 for students, seniors, and military; and $8 for the general public.

Savannah Legacy: A Story of African American Cultural Preservation and Innovation

JANUARY 23  | 6:00 PM

Reserve your spot!

This event will feature Meredith Stone, a Savannah native, architectural and urban designer, preservationist, and real estate professional. She will share her journey of genealogical research, including the incredible story she uncovered of her family’s path from slavery to becoming prominent leaders of African American innovation, cultural preservation, and education. She will discuss efforts to restore their ancestral property, an 1890s home located just south of Savannah State University, that became a haven for the community during segregation and is located on land once called Placentia Plantation, where generations of her family were enslaved. The property was recently determined eligible and is currently being nominated for the National Register of Historic Places for the significant contributions of Percy H. Stone, Harriet P. Stone, Monroe Nathan Work, and the entire Stone family.

Today, Meredith and her family uplift and honor the legacy by maintaining the family home that Percy and Harriet created as well as the archives of their personal libraries. Meredith attended the Percy and Harriet Stone’s Alma Mater, Hampton University and graduated with her master’s degree in architecture. She works with Gunn Meyerhoff Shay Architects, where she designs and restores buildings that are significant to Savannah’s cultural landscape. She is also a Director with the Vantosh Commercial Group at Seabolt Real Estate, specializing in commercial, land, and residential real estate. She is a community, small business, and housing advocate, TEDx Speaker, and real estate developer. Meredith currently serves on the Chatham County Zoning Board of Appeals and the board for the Creative Coast.

Through these images, visitors will discover a unique perspective on the intersection of Chinese heritage and Southern identity during this pivotal time in Savannah’s history

Old Chan Magic will be on view Jan 16 - May. It is open to the public and completely free.

In 1889, Chung T’ai Peng—renamed Robert Chan upon his arrival—became one of Savannah’s first Chinese immigrants. Robert and his wife, Annie, lived in the Davenport House from 1901 to 1902 while operating a Chinese laundry in what is now the Historic Kennedy Pharmacy. Their story embodies the broader experience of early Chinese immigrants in America while uniquely reflecting Savannah’s cultural landscape, shaped in large part by Robert’s leadership, influence, and social connections.

Arthouse Cinema: Heretic

Starring Hugh Grant as the charming, compelling, and ultimately diabolical Mr. Reed, 'Heretic' mixes elements of horror and psychological thriller as it casually unfolds into an intricate
cat-and-mouse game after two Mormon missionaries (Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East) ring his doorbell. Crackling with rich dialogue and cerebral debate, the latest from writer-directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods ('A Quiet Place') follows the young believers as they match wits with their host’s rarefied intellect. Forced to choose between belief and disbelief, they find themselves plunged into the darkest labyrinths of Reed’s mind.

Tickets for the film are $5 for SCAD Card holders; $8 for students, military, and seniors; and $10 for the general public.

Norman Rockwell & Peers: Illustrating Childhood

Norman Rockwell & Peers: Illustrating Childhood

Before televisions, computers, and high-speed internet, everyday Americans engaged with image-based storytelling through illustration. Illustration is art created to be reproduced for books, magazines, periodicals, advertisements, and other printed media. Designed covers—based on finished paintings—by artists like Norman Rockwell (1894–1978) regularly reached thousands of homes via mass-produced publications such as The Saturday Evening Post. Celebrating the charming, wholesome, and seemingly commonplace, Rockwell enjoyed a successful career, which unfolded against a string of era-defining crises and revolutions, including two World Wars, the Great Depression, struggles over Civil Rights, and space exploration. Through illustration, Rockwell and his peers chronicled the transformation and challenging of ideals in the 20th-century, sometimes using childhood to explore complex subject matter. By tapping into American adults’ nostalgia and their associations of childhood with innocence, these artists made subjects from consumer goods to wartime politics more appealing. Through advertisements and calendar illustrations, magazine covers, and story artwork, Norman Rockwell & Peers: Illustrating Childhood regards childhood as an expressive and revealing lens to view an evolving and often complex American society.
