Thursday, January 25, 6:00 pm, Dr. Paul Pressly, "The Story of Betty and Hercules, an enslaved Ossabaw Island couple."

Reserve your spot here: www.myhsf.org/events/lecture-series/

Historic Savannah Foundation's Lecture Series, "People, Places, and Stories that Define Savannah" is pleased to have Dr. Paul Pressly share the story of Betty and Hercules, an enslaved Ossabaw Island couple, who, along with a small group of enslaved people, escaped the island during the Revolutionary War. Dr Pressly’s lecture will address the flow of Black freedom seekers from Georgia to Spanish Florida and how it impacted the geography of slavery in the Southeast during the post-revolutionary period.

Paul Pressly is an educator and historian. He received his B.A. from Princeton University, Ph.D. in history from the University of Oxford, and a M.P.A. from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

He served as headmaster of The Savannah Country Day School from 1981 until 2004 and as president and chairman of national boards in Washington and Boston that set educational policy for independent schools, including the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS).

An historian, he is the author of several articles and a book, On the Rim of the Caribbean: Colonial Georgia and the British Atlantic World (University of Georgia Press, 2013). The book was co-winner of the Bell Award from the Georgia Historical Society as the best book published on Georgia history in 2013. He is co-editor of a more recent book, Coastal Nature, Coastal Culture: Environmental Histories of the Georgia Coast (University of Georgia Press, 2018).

He was director of the Ossabaw Island Education Alliance, which included researching and telling the story of the African Americans on the island. As part of this work, he organized a symposium on African American life on the Georgia coast and produced a book published by the University of Georgia Press, African American Life in the Georgia Lowcountry: the Gullah-Geechee and the Atlantic World. In 2009, he received the Governor’s Award in the Humanities.

He currently serves on numerous boards, including Bethesda Academy, the Hodge Foundation, and the UGA Press Advisory Council. The University of Georgia Press is publishing his forthcoming book, A Southern Underground Railroad: Black Georgians and the Promise of Spanish Florida and Indian Lands in the spring of 2024.

The lecture will take place at Historic Savannah Foundation’s headquarters, located at 321 E. York Street. We will gather to mingle and enjoy a glass of wine at 5:30 p.m., and the discussion will start at 6:00 p.m. The event is open to the public; however, space is limited so reservations are recommended. Attendance is free for HSF members and $15 for non-members. Both members and non-members may RSVP by emailing Kendall Graham at kgraham@myhsf.org or calling 912-233-7787.

9 TO 5

What is your favorite work of art from Telfair Museums’ permanent collection? With a growing collection of over 8,000 objects, that can be a tough question to answer! Fortunately, Telfair’s staff, docents, and member affinity groups took on the challenge and selected 60 works for display in our largest group-curated exhibition to date, 9 to 5.

This exhibition presents a unique opportunity for voices at the museum across all departments and sites, traditionally working from 9am to 5pm, to contribute their personal insights into what makes a work of art compelling―choices that have been developed through time in the galleries, interactions with visitors, or individual research. For some, the technique or subject matter is paramount, while for others their special connection to the work is most important. These fresh viewpoints will be brought to the walls of the Jepson Center as the guest curators interpret work for the public through a personal statement on each label. In addition to amplifying the voices of Telfair’s dedicated team, the new perspectives are intended to inspire viewers to consider what makes a work of art unique beyond its art-historical meaning and the importance of creative expression to bring us joy.

EARTH ANGEL

It’s hard to miss the large, shiny sculpture soaring over your head when you enter the Jepson Center’s atrium. Titled Earth Angel, the reflective butterfly is a site-specific installation by the collaborative Los Angeles-based duo FriendsWithYou, aka artists Samuel Borkson and Arturo Sandoval III. Their overarching goal is to connect us to each other and ourselves, spreading friendship and building community around the world. Earth Angel is a new character in their longform conceptual project to unite humanity by renaming our planet Ocean. It represents a visiting creature from beyond the heavens to Ocean who is the embodiment of vibrational harmony. The mirror-like surface symbolizes the universal totality present in everything and invites us to see ourselves in this mythological character—distorted, transformed, and anew.

FEELS LIKE FREEDOM: PHILLIP J. HAMPTON

Telfair Museums presents Feels like Freedom: Phillip J. Hampton, the first large-scale museum retrospective of American painter Phillip J. Hampton (1922–2016), an artist long overdue for continued research and recognition. For 17 years, between 1952 and 1969, Hampton served as an influential visual arts professor and eventual department head at Savannah State College, today known as Savannah State University. He was instrumental in building and expanding a developing arts program and planned arts festivals, taught art appreciation workshops, and organized exhibitions including the first exhibition of African American art at the Telfair Academy in 1959. This new exhibition, alongside a companion exhibition The Early Years at Savannah State’s Kennedy Fine Arts Gallery, will consider Hampton’s impact alongside and as part of the broader context of African American artmaking in the mid-20th century.

Feels Like Freedom traces Hampton’s incredible and innovative artistic production from illustrative realism to abstract experimentation. Beginning with his social realist drawings and paintings created in Savannah, viewers will be captivated by the artist’s creative evolution toward the freedom and self-discovery he found in abstraction. His innovative spirit will be showcased and celebrated through his use of experimental mediums including string gridwork, acrylic emulsions, and shaped canvases. In an interview for the Savannah Morning News in 1995, Hampton stated that he “has always wanted to find something uniquely my own. … The search is more important to me than the conclusion.” This exhibition invites visitors to appreciate Hampton’s undeniably unique vision and revel in the lifelong search that led to an array of incredible works on view for all to enjoy.
